Cynicism is a perception of disbelief or a lack of faith in something or someone. It comes from the notion that people are, for the most part, narcissistic and not dependable. Cynical people adhere to the adage, “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.”
There is no faith in cynicism, only fear. It is fuelled by unbelief and mistrust. To believe that people, in general. are morally deprived and are dominated by selfishness cannot be a healthy disposition. It’s a frame of mind that opens itself to arrogance, resentment and hard hearts.
We can’t live in cynicism.
“Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
When Jesus is released in us through faith, we will become rooted and grounded in His love. He becomes the source of our lives.
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
Psalm 27:1
As we become more rooted and established in His love, it gives us the ability to live out 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. Through Christ, we can bear all things, believe all things, hope all things and endure all things.
In a world that is becoming increasingly cynical, an antidote is essential. When cynicism increases, hope decreases. We know that hope has a name and that name is Jesus. He is the antidote.
“I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Romans 15:13
“Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’”
John 7:38
This living water is full of hope, peace and joy. When we are overflowing with this river of living water, hope, peace and joy overflows into our families, local churches, workplaces and neighbourhoods. And this is the Kingdom of God!
“Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”
Matthew 6:10
