Is our hope in an Election?

Now that we’ve entered 2025, the big question for most political pundits in Canada is: “Will there be an election sooner or later?”

The Conservatives have a plan to have the Standing Committee on Public Accounts consider a non-confidence motion in early January, which they aim to bring before the House of Commons as soon as January 30. For the motion to succeed, the committee would need the support of the NDP. While Jagmeet Singh has pledged to bring down the government, it’s still uncertain whether he will back this particular motion. The NDP may choose to weigh the timing and strategic benefits of the move but could instead wait for their own opposition day to introduce a non-confidence motion, which wouldn’t occur until March.

There is also the possibility that the Prime Minister could prorogue Parliament. The question is, how long would he be able to do so? Some speculate that he might prorogue until October. However, there would likely be significant pressure on the Governor General to reject such a request, as leaving Canada in a caretaker government position for that extended period would be seen as irresponsible. Even if the Prime Minister seeks a four-month prorogation to step down and allow time for a leadership race within his party, such a lengthy delay would likely be viewed as too long.

There are countless ways the current situation could unfold, and what I’ve outlined are just a few possibilities. One thing is clear, though: there is a prevailing worldly narrative designed to keep Canadians anxious about the future, especially with the looming threat of 25% Trump tariffs. This narrative seeks to fuel uncertainty and division, casting shadows of fear over what lies ahead.

But what is our narrative? Where do we find our hope, and in whom do we place our trust? While the world may try to sway us, we know that our hope is anchored in something far greater than any political or economic storm. We serve a God who is sovereign over all things. He reigns supreme over every circumstance, every challenge, and every decision. Nothing takes Him by surprise; nothing causes Him to worry. His purpose will prevail.

As we navigate these uncertain times, it’s vital that we stay grounded in His narrative, the one that is found in His Word. Let us proclaim the Word of faith, speaking life and hope into our communities. The Word is near us—it is in our mouths and in our hearts. It’s not a distant idea or a far-off hope, but a living reality we can hold on to, especially when the world feels uncertain. May we choose to declare His truth over the prevailing fears and anxieties of our day, standing firm in the unshakable hope we have in Him.

“The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);

Romans 10:8

  • Pray for peace for our nation. Pray for a spirit of calm amidst division and unrest.
  • Pray for stability within our government, that those in positions of authority would govern with wisdom, integrity, and a genuine desire to serve their constituents.
  • Pray that the hearts of our leaders would turn away from selfish ambition and political survival. Pray that they would make decisions that promote the well-being of all Canadians.
  • Pray for Shalom, the destruction of everything bound to chaos to prevail over every plan rooted in disorder. Pray that our leaders would have clarity of mind to address the challenges we face as a nation.
  • Pray for the church to be peacemakers, to model grace in our words and actions. Pray that our words would be wise and gentle and that they would carry life.

“Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”

James 3:18
